Lives Affected by Asbestos: A Call for Awareness and Action
Date: 18/12/24
Asbestos, once hailed as a miracle material for its fire-retardant properties, has left a profound and tragic legacy. It is now known to be the primary cause of devastating diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Banned in the UK in 1999, asbestos is still present in countless buildings, from schools and hospitals to offices and homes. If left undisturbed, it may not pose an immediate risk, but any renovation, demolition or maintenance work can release deadly fibres into the air, endangering both workers and building occupants.
Catherine Howard, Principal Consultant at iON Consultants, is well aware of the devastating impact this material can have. Her friend, Michelle Spencer, spent her teenage years working as a telephonist at a factory in Rochdale. Michelle had no reason to suspect asbestos exposure in her administrative role, but microscopic fibres from blue lagging in the engine room would eventually lead to her mesothelioma diagnosis decades later. Ironically, the factory was in the same town where the first published case of occupational asbestos disease occurred.
Mesothelioma is often diagnosed years after exposure. Michelle received her diagnosis at the relatively young age of 60, decades after her time at the Rochdale factory. Her story highlights not only the dangers of asbestos exposure but more importantly, the critical need to advocate for consistent adherence to regulatory practices and standards across the industry to prevent exposure purely by just going to work.
At iON Consultants, we see firsthand the challenges and complexities faced by those working on refurbishment and remediation projects. As asbestos specialists, we remain committed to preventing exposure and protecting those who may be at risk. It is stories like Michelle's, and those of other close friends who have been affected by asbestos exposure, that have led us to partner with Mesothelioma UK in support of its tireless work in raising awareness and helping those affected.
Mesothelioma UK provides a lifeline to those already diagnosed. The charity’s specialist nurses offer tailored care, guidance on advanced treatments, and access to clinical trials. Together, our team is running, cycling, swimming and walking 5,000 miles to raise £5,000 for this invaluable cause. We are clocking up the miles, but we need your help! We know this is a busy and expensive time of year, but if you can spare a few pennies to support our campaign, please donate here.
As well as supporting Mesothelioma UK, we’re calling for higher standards in our industry. The construction industry must now rise to the challenge of preventing the mistakes of the past from happening again. Our team of asbestos consultants helps duty holders manage asbestos risks confidently and competently. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you need any support regarding an upcoming project. We can help either by overseeing the project, filling skills gaps, or providing tailored training to support your team. The HSE is also running its highly successful Asbestos: Your Duty campaign, an important initiative that reminds duty holders of their legal responsibilities under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012. By sharing knowledge, providing strategic guidance, and promoting industry best practices, we can make informed safety decisions that protect workers and communities. Together, we can build a legacy of safety, responsibility, and a healthier future for all.
