Enhancing Safe Programme Delivery
Client: Nu Instruments (part of AMETEK Inc)
Sector: Manufacturing
Services: Client Advisor and Principal Designer
Location: Wrexham, North Wales
The Client
Since its inception in 1995, Nu Instruments has grown to become a market leader in the design and manufacture of high-performance mass spectrometers. From its manufacturing facility on the Wrexham Industrial Estate, Nu supplies high-end instruments to academic, government and industrial organisations worldwide. In 2016, Nu joined the Materials Analysis Division of AMETEK, a leading global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices.
The Challenge
The roof of Nu Instruments' head office and manufacturing facility needed an upgrade. As the company's existing health and safety advisors, we were well placed to support the project and confirm its compliance with CDM Regulations 2015. The project had to be carried out during the winter months, which presented some unique challenges. Not only did we have to maintain production operations at the site, but we also had to ensure that the valuable and sensitive scientific equipment housed in the building was protected from contamination.
iON’s Solution
Acting as the Client Advisor and Principal Designer for the project, our primary role was to ensure that every aspect of the project complied with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM) 2015. This involved several key activities, including:
- Procuring asbestos surveys and providing specification support
- Developing the Pre-Construction Information (PCI)
- Facilitating design risk management and mitigation measures
- Vetting and monitoring the Principal Contractor and general contractors
- Conducting construction-phase health and safety site inspections
- Preparing the project's health and safety file
By implementing strict equipment handling protocols and maintaining a clean environment throughout the project, we were able to support the safe and timely delivery of the project. This protected the equipment housed in the manufacturing facility. It also minimised any disruption to daily operations.
"iON Consultants supported our project team to ensure we met our CDM obligations and that all parties involved were compliant from the initial design to handover. They embedded their experience and knowledge into our team, which culminated in the project being delivered safely, on time and within budget."
